About BLOX B.V.

BLOX is a consumer crypto-asset platform operated by BLOX B.V., a privately held Dutch company. According to research summaries, the company was founded in 2018 and is headquartered in Nijmegen, in the province of Gelderland, Netherlands. BLOX is positioned as a mobile-first app aimed at retail investors - its tagline is 'Iedereen kan crypto' ('Everyone can do crypto') - rather than a bank, broker or institutional custodian. It states on its site that more than 850,000 users have signed up. Sources: weareblox.com, BLOX company profile

The platform lets users buy and trade a range of crypto-assets (BLOX states it supports Bitcoin, Ethereum and 100+ other coins) and offers two account types. The 'Beheerd' (Managed) option keeps crypto safeguarded separately from BLOX's own assets, for a subscription of EUR 1 per month plus an annual fee. A separate 'Verdien' (Earn) product lets users lend their crypto to BLOX Earn for a stated 0.25% to 12.5% return; BLOX explicitly states this activity does not fall under AFM supervision and carries risk. The platform settles in EUR. Source: weareblox.com

On the legal point: the contracting entity is BLOX B.V., established in the Netherlands and supervised by the Netherlands Authority for the Financial Markets (AFM). BLOX states on its site that it holds a MiCAR licence from the AFM. Under that authorisation, the entity is recorded in the AFM crypto register for the following crypto-asset services: custody and administration of crypto-assets, exchange of crypto-assets for funds, and transfer services for crypto-assets. What the MiCA authorisation covers is therefore custody, exchange-for-funds and transfer of crypto-assets. It does not, on the recorded service list, extend to other MiCA crypto-asset services such as exchange of crypto-assets for other crypto-assets, placing, reception and transmission of orders, execution of orders, advice or portfolio management. The lending-based 'Earn' yield product is, by BLOX's own statement, outside AFM supervision and is not a MiCA crypto-asset service. Prospective users should confirm the current authorisation directly in the AFM register before relying on it. Source: AFM crypto register

Which crypto services is BLOX B.V. authorised to offer in the EU?

Under its MiCA authorisation issued by Dutch Authority for the Financial Markets (AFM) and De Nederlandsche Bank (DNB), BLOX B.V. (BLOX B.V.) is approved to provide the following services to EEA residents. Each service is defined in Article 3(1)(16) of Regulation (EU) 2023/1114.

  • Providing custody and administration of crypto-assets on behalf of clients

The exchange holds your crypto in its own wallets. Authorisation here means MiCA's segregation and insurance rules apply: client crypto-assets must be ring-fenced from the exchange's own funds.

  • Exchange of crypto-assets for funds

The exchange offers crypto-to-fiat (e.g. BTC to EUR) and fiat-to-crypto conversion. Authorisation here implies MiCA's pricing transparency requirements.

  • Providing transfer services for crypto-assets on behalf of clients

The exchange can move crypto between addresses on your behalf, including off-platform withdrawals. The Travel Rule applies to these transfers.

Which services is BLOX B.V. not authorised to offer?

BLOX B.V.'s MiCA licence does not cover: Trading platform, Exchange for crypto, Order execution, Placing, Order R&T, Advice, Portfolio mgmt. These services may still be offered by other authorised providers, or by BLOX B.V. under a different regulatory framework (for example, derivatives may fall under MiFID II rather than MiCA). Why is BLOX B.V. licensed in Netherlands?

The Netherlands historically had one of the strictest pre-MiCA crypto frameworks, with DNB running a stand-alone Wwft register. AFM is the MiCA-designated competent authority. Bitvavo is the dominant Dutch-licensed CASP; many global exchanges previously withdrew from the Dutch market under pre-MiCA pressure. What does this mean for users of BLOX B.V. in the EU?

If you transact through BLOX B.V.'s EEA-authorised entity (BLOX B.V.), the protections introduced by MiCA apply to your relationship from onwards. In practical terms this means: client crypto-assets are ring-fenced from the exchange's own funds (Article 70 MiCA), the authorised entity holds prudential capital, has formal complaint-handling procedures, and is subject to transparency obligations on fees and order execution. One thing to verify yourself: the legal entity you contract with day-to-day must match the entity in the ESMA register. Some global exchanges operate multiple legal entities under one brand. Confirm in BLOX B.V.'s terms of service that your contracting entity is BLOX B.V., not a non-EEA affiliate.
