Frequently asked questions

How does The Crypto Register decide which exchanges to list?

We track every major centralised exchange (CEX) actively serving EEA users. Inclusion as 'authorised' is determined solely by appearance in the ESMA Register of Crypto-Asset Service Providers - we add no editorial or commercial criterion to that determination.

What is the difference between a MiCA authorisation and a national crypto licence?

Under MiCA (Regulation (EU) 2023/1114), authorisation is issued by a National Competent Authority but enables passporting across all 30 EEA states. Pre-existing national crypto licences (e.g. Dutch Wwft registration, German BaFin crypto-custody licence) are being phased out. Only MiCA authorisation will allow service to EEA residents after 1 July 2026.

Are all listed authorised exchanges safe to use?

MiCA authorisation indicates supervision and rule compliance, not absolute safety. Authorised CASPs are subject to client-asset ring-fencing, prudential capital, and conduct rules. Choose based on a combination of licence status, service breadth, fees, and your own due diligence.
